Boat intercepted and turned back to Indonesia

00:00 Jan 8 2014 Indian Ocean

An asylum seeker vessel carrying 25 people was turned back to Indonesia, forcing local villagers to help rescue asylum seekers as the vessel came closer to Indonesia. An Indonesian police commission told Fairfax Media that one of the asylum seekers said the Australian vessel that intercepted them fired shots to scare the asylum seekers, a claim denied by the immigration minister.
