Description
Operation Sovereign Borders report: AMSA receives a satellite telephone call from a person aboard a vessel reporting they were requiring assistance. The caller gives a Global Positioning System position placing the vessel 73 nautical miles north-north-west of Christmas Island. A RAN vessel and an Orion aircraft are sent to respond and a broadcast is issued to shipping in the area. The RAN vessel boards the vessel upon which the SAR action is cancelled and coordination transferred to Border Protection Command. On 14 December, 2013, all 71 people are transferred into the care of Australian government agencies at Christmas Island.
